Dialogue 2 (cont'd)

Prufrock: Well, you're obviously not wearing the normal mask of humanity. What kind of face is that anyway?

Meursault: A French face.

Prufrock: The one that's not smiling at me or the one you refuse to show?

Meursault: Why do you think I'm wearing this mask that you keep seeing?

Prufrock: You are, you are. I can tell. No one's eyes look like that normally. Don't you look out through those eyes?

Meursault: Yes, but why are you trying to look in?

Prufrock is startled and turns away.

Meursault changes the subject.
I saw you looking at the captain's daughter.

Prufrock: What of it?

Meursault: She's pretty.

Prufrock: Do you think she likes me?

Meursault: Does it matter?

Prufrock: (wistfully) I like her.

Meursault: So why don't you make love to her?

Prufrock: (shocked) What are you saying, that she's some whore?

Meursault: She's pretty.

Prufrock: Great, you're trying to set me up with a "pretty whore."

Meursault: She has a nice nose. I'd make love to her, just so I could get closer to that nose.

Prufrock: Well, since you approve of her nose, go ahead, you make love to her.
